RT

Our Resident Teuton (RT for short) is a masculine, barbarian representative in a strong-willed feminine household. As a crotchety old man in training, RT has many dislikes: foolish people, people with high-pitched voices, foolish people with high-pitched voices, waffling, being photographed, and receiving attention of any kind (especially being written about on the World-wide Web). His large Germanic brow furrows in my direction even as I type this. Crotchetiness aside, RT is also one to be counted on to move large or heavy objects without asking why; to make solid decisions in terribly stressful or dangerous situations; and to quietly comfort sick, wounded, or irritated animals with the patience of Job. He also has an unwavering sense of honor and loyalty, an irritating but precise logic, and more education than a barbarian ought to have.

Miss Pat

Miss Pat is the source of many of the ideas that end up winding their way into Jenotopia–which makes sense, as she is MY source! Miss Pat endured the emotional wasteland of my teenage years and is still willing to speak to me, which is pretty cool. She is a refreshing, bewildering kaleidoscope of identities and ideas, and I am pleased to say I never know when I walk through her door whether I will be fronted with a discussion of ancient Greek history, Jungian mythology, or the ninth dimension. Sometimes the three will all be linked in the same sentence. Ever the seeker of knowledge, Miss Pat can always be counted on to send me home with stacks of required reading materials (which I MUST read, as there will be a discussion in class tomorrow) accompanied by warm, soft loaves of freshly-baked bread. Her hobbies include reading voraciously, collecting things for me to read, baking, yoga, and constructing a shrine to her beloved Teddy Roosevelt, which should be completed sometime in 2009.

BD Soupski

Big Daddy Soupski is the sort of engineering genius who can’t always remember to tie his shoes. He grew up as an American child in Germany, so he looks at life just a little bit differently than the rest of us Yanks. BD Soupski loves to cook things in extremely large pots—and by extremely large I mean industrial-sized, not just pots you can pick up at any retail outlet. Lasagne, enormous roasts, chili, and his beloved soups are all cooked from scratch in an all-day process that yields some of the most savory, mouth-watering delights you could ever hope to enjoy. And enjoy them you shall, for they will be there tomorrow, and the next day . . .

Along with cooking, BD also enjoys reading through large tomes on positron emission tomography and revising the lyrics to obscure old songs. From BD I inherited my obsession about food safety and my tendency to shout orders in the kitchen. He also passed along a love of large pots and a desire to feed everyone—and feed them, and feed them, and feed them.
